What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the act of stimulating, usually by the means of needles, certain specific sites of the skin, mucous membranes or subcutaneous tissues of the body for the purpose of improving health or relieving pain.

To obtain the same goals, the acupuncturist may also use other methods of stimulation such as:

  • heat: moxibustion, lamp
  • pressure: cupping, massage, acupressure, ear-seeds
  • electrical stimulation: electro-acupuncture
  • light/laser stimulation
