Insomnia and acupuncture

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) analyses sleep using two alternating phenomenon.

The Yin aspect represents a state of mental relaxation, restfulness and nighttime sleep.
The Yang aspect represents a state of mental activity, movement and daytime alertness

These two mental states are in continual movement allowing the transition from wakefulness and sleep and vice versa. Sleep occurs as the Yang recedes and the Yin dominates. Wakefulness, the opposite occurs when the Yin energy recedes and the Yang energy dominates.

Insomnia is a disorder affecting the quality and the duration of sleep. It might manifest as difficulty falling asleep, waking frequently during the night, waking up too early in the morning or as a totally sleepless night. A disruption of the normal yin and yang energy cycles may be the cause any of these different sleep problems.

  • difficulty falling asleep or the absence of sleep is a sign that an excess Yang energy is too active.
  • waking frequently during the night is a manifestation of a deficient Yin energy impeding relaxation and deep sleep.
  • waking too early is a sign of excess Yang activity in relation to the Yin relaxation, causing early wakefulness.

When Yin and Yang are in perfect harmony, insomnia is no longer a problem.
